GT events spectaculaire

Thought we'd share some info on the events that Great Treasures has frequented recently:

Friday 22nd February
Victoria went to 'Britain on View', a BRITISH photography exhibition at the Oxo Tower (see http://www.britainonview.com/).

The photography exhibition entitled Britain on view is currently on show at the Oxo Tower, along the Thames in London.

The exhibition, created to encourage breaks away within parts of Britain has 25 blown up images of beautiful views, all of amazingly beautiful areas of Britain. It takes less than twenty minutes to view the collection, however it's short length does not disappoint due to the array of stunning views. The views of which range from leafy woods to warm fields of corn and from Scottish streams to sandy beaches.

Whilst there, we played a game called 'which photo would you have on your wall at home?' Which my friend replied Bedruthen Steps in Cornwall, well she's bias coming from Cornwall. She said she could imagine walking across the beach and leaving her footprints in the sand. I chose Near Sandford Orcas, for it's wonderful warm and happy feeling it provokes inside as you look at it.

Afterwards we proceeded to the little café a couple of doors down and had hot chocolates to consider what we had seen. We both agreed that it certainly does it's job, we're now inspired to travel around Britain more and see these beautiful places that are just on our doorstep.

Thurs 14th February
Another great night out, in persuit of more British people about to hit the limelight: Doug Walker. Doug's debut Album, Fear Together is due out on 3rd March so we're catching him in action whilst we can!

To get a feel for Doug's music go to: http://www.myspace.com/dougwalkermusic

Thurs 7th February: The GT Team spent the evening entertained by British comedian Daniel Kitson (see http://www.danielkitson.com/).

Report by Nik Clarke: It was always going to be an evening of special comedy with Team GT in tow, having sniffed out the venue, the GT girls and their +1's started the evening off in a local Chinese, greeted with a ‘slippery floor’ sign we were shown to the table.

After a quick skate around the food and chocolate fountain and a game of guess the year to the music on the TV we slid off to the venue. Immediately, Vics +1 found that even the door staff at the venue are comics telling him that only soft drinks were served inside [the comedy did improve]. Vics & her +1 were Kitson Virgins and prior to his arrival on stage were eager to see his appearance, with Em and her +1 having completed their Kitson comedy hatrick earlier in the year, we teased.

The Glee club is a perfect size to see a comedian and Daniel Kitson didn’t disappoint, after ditching the mike, due to the room size, he confidently got into his act. Daniel started tonight’s proceedings with one of his characteristic giggles, as he eased through hilarious anecdotes he intelligently talks about a stage in his life which involved ‘muddying the timelines’ when confronting muggers, teenage confrontations on a bus and Cliffside walks which involves his mum teaching him to say ‘hello’ to all passersby’s.

Occasionally Kitsons Razorsharp wit comes out, generally after his stutter interrupts his performance, fortunately this enhances his performance and the addiction that is Daniel Kitson, having seen Vic and her +1 in stitches……. I think that’s 2 more for the growing fan list.

Excellent Exhibition in Nottingham

If you are in Nottingham today, you must pop along to the Waterstones store, where you can visit the ‘View From The Top’ exhibition, especially if you have left your Christmas shopping to the last minute!

As soon as you get to the fourth floor, you are overwhelmed with beautifully handcrafted products that don’t fail to inspire.

Sue Holdaway

The first lady we spoke to was Sue Holdaway, a jewellery designer who has recently won the Paul Smith Award for design and creativity, which is fantastic, considering that this time last year she was helping people to wean themselves off hard drugs.
One of the exciting services that Sue can provide for Great Treasures is to take a customers’ Champagne bottle from their wedding day, smash it and design cufflinks, rings and necklaces from this – what a fantastic idea to savour the memories of such a special day!

Debbie Bryan

The second stall we visited was that of Debbie Bryan, another award winner! Debbie’s unique scarves, brooches and cufflinks have won her the ‘Craft Award’ at the 2007 Nottingham Creative Business awards.
We spoke to Debbie about an exciting project that could work well on the Great Treasures website… customers may upload words or images that are important to them and have them inlaid onto a badge that can then become a keepsake or beautifully thoughtful present.

She is also able to colour match her products to ensure that they are perfect for wedding day essentials, which is one of the wonderful services that a smaller company can promote and do very well.

Red Shoes Memories

The next stall consisted of leather handbags with ‘cherished moments’ interpreted on the inside of the bags, which means that the special (maybe secret) image can only be seen by the wearer! Such a fabulous personalised gift that is sure to delight!

Corrina Rothwell

The following lady was away from her stall as we passed, but we spent a while reading the funny textile art that have great stories behind them…

Mark Seaton / Michelle Taylor

The next chap was a student at Nottingham Trent Uni, just down the road and he was busy drawing something which caught our eye. After talking to him for a while it was evident that this guy is destined for big things, he has just published a book, called Let It Out to raise money for Family Care Charity (http://www.familycare-nottingham.org.uk/). The book includes stories and pictures from British children who are abused, some of which is very, very touching. We are purchasing one this week and speaking to someone at Family Care about selling them on our website (obviously with no profit being taken) in order to help out Mark. We think he’s one to keep an eye on in future!

His girlfriend, Michelle Taylor had work up too, which was really delicate pin designed and framed images. It was very intricate and would look fabulous on a wall in a contemporary designed home or office!

Molly’s Mum

This collection of handcrafted ‘wearables’ and ‘nic-naks’ for grown ups and little ones is so sweet! There’s a lot of things in the range and the brand that Molly’s Mum (don’t actually know what the Mum’s name is!) has created for herself is very endearing and fun, which is a wonderful way to set herself apart from her competition and more importantly, sell products! We think that we need to speak to this lady about featuring her products on our site!

In Conclusion

Wow, what a wonderful place to be so close to Christmas!

The exhibitor’s passion for their work was infectious and it was fabulous to be in such a ‘hive of excitement’. This wonderful passion that leaks out of the designer/makers h can be lost in a large exhibition such as Pulse or Top Drawer in London, as they have such a high footfall that they become tired of saying the same thing a million times.

The exhibition was well set out, nice and airy and warm. The only thing it missed was even more advertising in the local press, and a few more signs in the store, as there were only posters at the bottom of the escalators. We think that there needed to be a stand outside the store and even a mention of it at the time of ordering a Costa Coffee on the 3rd floor, where there are people who are having a bit of chill out time and would appreciate a nice hour wandering around the exhibition!

In case you’re wondering, we’re on the case with these wonderful designer/makers and we’re very excited to think that these beautiful products could be on the Great Treasures website in the early part of 2008 : so watch this space!

Get in the Christmas Spirit

GT Love Christmas Egg Nog!....We know it sounds a bit weird, but if you haven't tried it, you really must, it's delicious.

How it all came about, including the slightly strange name descends from upper class England in the 1800's. Originally containing Egg, Milk and Ale and the word nog is supposedly from the word noggin a which was a wooden mug served in taverns.

Obviously with most stories descending from days of old there is some doubt about the origin!
We at GT are claiming this fabulously christmas drink as our own British Treasure!

RECIPE:
from Good Food Live (http://uktv.co.uk/food)
Creamy, dreamy and laced with bourbon and brandy, Amy Willcock's glorious version of traditional egg nog makes a divine offering

Level of difficulty: Easy Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients
12
Eggs, separated
215g
Sugar
900ml
Milk
240ml Bourbon
120ml
Brandy
900ml double cream

Method
1. Beat the egg yolks and sugar together until the mixture forms ribbon trails in the bowl. Add the milk, bourbon and brandy. Mix well.
2. Just before serving whisk the egg whites into peaks, then do the same with the cream. Fold them into the egg yolk mix and pour it into a large jug. Add a grating of nutmeg over the top and serve.
Cooks Notes:Raw or lightly cooked eggs should not be served to young children, elderly people, invalids and pregnant women, because of the risk of salmonella poisoning.

Banks Mill Open Studios Event

VIP Banks Mill Event

Last Monday, we attended a VIP Open Studio event at Bank’s Mill in Derby, and boy is there some talent in our British graduates! From jewellery to silk painting, wicker installations to photographers, the building is a hive of creative people that work hard to progress their talents to enable them to run their own businesses.

Bank’s Mill Studios was “set up to retain Graduate level skills in the creative industries in the Derby area, with business and professional development support.”

We’d been earlier in the year to their summer Open Studios, and imagined a lot of the products would be similar for their winter collections, but it was inspiring to see that many of them had progressed their collections to such an extent that there are even a handful of graduates that are now in contact with companies abroad, such as Sara Taylor who is speaking to stores over in Japan about exporting her ceramic wares over there. See www.sarataylor.co.uk for examples of her work.

Other inspiring studios were Massey and Rogers, fabric designers www.masseyandrogers.co.uk, where we loved the cushions, table runners and cards.

Natalie Jane Harris, a jewellery designer maker who produces different ranges of jewellery using semi-precious stones and beads. All of Natalie’s work is hand made in silver, 18 and 22k gold and using traditional techniques. Have a peek at www.nataliejaneharris.com .

After such an inspiring trip, looking at all the work of British designers, we thought we had to tell you all about it, We’ll let you know when the next one is and maybe you can visit yourselves!
